Remembrance Day in Forres 2024
Forres observed Remembrance Day 2024 with a solemn and dignified ceremony, bringing together the community to honour the sacrifices of service members past and present. The day began with a well-attended service at St. Leonard’s Church, where veterans, local officials, youth organisations, and townsfolk gathered, unified in a spirit of remembrance.
Following the service, a procession made its way through Forres to the War Memorial on Cluny Hill, a striking spot that overlooks the town and has become a focal point for reflection and respect. Residents adorned with red poppies walked alongside British Legion members, cadets, and schoolchildren, their presence creating a poignant connection across generations.
At the stroke of 11 a.m., the town fell silent for two minutes, a collective pause marked by deep reflection. The silence was broken by the mournful notes of the Last Post, played by a bugler, its echo lingering in the autumn air. This moment was followed by the laying of wreaths by community leaders, veterans, and local schools, each wreath symbolising respect, gratitude, and remembrance. The young cadets and Forres Academy students involved brought a sense of hope and continuity, standing shoulder to shoulder with older generations.
This year’s ceremony, like those before it, highlighted Forres’s strong community spirit and deep respect for those who served. As the wreaths lay at the foot of the War Memorial, Forres stood united, honouring the courage and sacrifice of its heroes with quiet pride and gratitude.
