The Keen Eye in the Sky: Air Traffic Controllers in the Visual Control Room

Imagine a bustling airport, a symphony of arrivals and departures. Behind the scenes, in the heart of the control tower, sits the air traffic controller in the visual control room (VCR) – the orchestra conductor ensuring this complex ballet takes flight safely and efficiently.

Unlike their radar-reliant counterparts, VCR controllers rely primarily on their keen eyesight and exceptional spatial awareness. Perched high above the airfield, they have a panoramic view of the airport environment, encompassing runways, taxiways, and the surrounding airspace.

Their primary responsibility is to maintain safe separation between aircraft on the ground and in the air within their designated area, typically extending a few nautical miles from the airport. This involves:

  • Monitoring aircraft movements Controllers constantly scan the skies, tracking the position, altitude, and speed of each aircraft using binoculars and advanced visual aids.
  • Issuing clear and concise instructions: They communicate with pilots via radio, guiding them through taxiing, take-offs, landings, and any necessary manoeuvres to avoid conflicts.
  • Maintaining situational awareness: VCR controllers juggle multiple tasks simultaneously, keeping track of weather conditions, potential hazards, and any deviations from planned procedures.

The job demands exceptional skills:

  • Visual acuity Controllers need sharp eyesight to identify aircraft markings, even in challenging weather conditions.
  • Decision-making: They must think critically and react quickly to unexpected situations, prioritizing safety and efficiency.
  • Communication: Clear and concise instructions are crucial for ensuring pilots understand and follow directions.

Technology plays a supporting role:

While visual observation reigns supreme, VCRs are equipped with radar displays providing additional information on aircraft beyond their immediate line of sight. Advanced communication systems facilitate coordination with other controllers and airport personnel.

The air traffic controller in the VCR is a vital cog in the aviation machine. Their expertise and vigilance ensure the smooth flow of air traffic, keeping the skies safe for passengers and crew alike.

Edinburgh Airport Tower

At nearly 60 metres tall, Edinburgh Airport Tower is a contemporary high-rise, of eye-catching design offering wonderful panoramic views, from this lofty perspective the visual control room perched at the top of Edinburgh Airport Tower offers the ideal viewing platform to observe air traffic in every direction.

Lighting

Full sun, the perfect light source for this occasion, with an almost cloudless sky the structure was always going to look good with back lighting, the sun at a lowish angle was an ideal opportunity for the capture.

Modelling

You couldn't coordinate this, the air traffic controllers where an added bonus and it just makes the shot for me more than anything.
