Photography Blog

Welcome to John Gilchrist Photography Blogspot.

Some people are said to have an ''Eye'' for a photograph, I believe it’s more about practice, persistence and passion! Over the years, I really have stuck my nose into photography and have always kept myself firmly on the photography learning curve. I think I can safely say that it is something I will never leave! I prefer a more relaxed approach to photography. Photos are often taken at locations such as local parks or nearby locations in or around Edinburgh and Midlothian.

Ensuring that my subjects are comfortable and enjoying themselves is a vital part of each shoot. My passion is photography. To capture that shot that I want, so I can treasure it forever. To grab the spark in a special moment, an event or someone you love so you can hold it for a lifetime. The great thing about photography is that the subject can be open. I could get lost in creating a fantasy piece or photograph

Content is King

A great story is personal, I will do my best to keep you up to date and amused with fresh material. Look out for links, some images may open up or redirect to support or build on what’s there. To contact me, please drop me a line via the contact form.

  • .... what will you find here?

Good question, well to be truthful I do not know! Thought I would start by placing at least one image every couple of months in this area. It could be a favourite image from a recently taken compilation, even a little bit of something that simply takes my fancy, or maybe a not so new image from days gone by.

a unique collection of handpicked images

I will try to put in some up to date news mixed with various latest work and the odd opinion and view. It will be a “hodgepodge” of content so this does mean irregularity; do not expect continuity to flow, inconsistency is the key here. If nothing else, just skip the blurb and scroll through the images. The principal use of this blog is to focus on photographs rather than text; I will attempt to drop in a line or two to describe some background information about the photograph and some aspects of artistic expression. There is no doubt about it a photo blog helps conserve the memories. It’s nice to flick through my shared photographs and recollect a few key moments from time gone by. Tynecastle - HMFC Football Stadium

Hearts, Hearts, glorious Hearts, It's down at Tynecastle they bide, the talk of the toon are the boys in maroon and Auld Reekie supports them with pride. Their Tynecastle Stadium is based in Gorgie, their colours are maroon and white.

The Badge

The Heart Badge adorned on the Hearts Football Strip is based on the Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the Royal Mile. Tourists to Edinburgh will frequently observe people spitting on the Heart. Why would you spit in the Heart? Well, there are several assumptions associated with this Scottish Tradition ranging from the discontent against authority to the “it will bring you good luck” element and apparently if you are lovers it’s not in your best interest to stand in the centre and kiss.

Bored Stiff

Hardly surprising there was lots of waiting to be done. Passing time in an overspill car park is no fun, particularly when you are at the back of a long queue and there is only one exit. Thank goodness for furry hats and mobile phones, just enough to keep the chill of and the mind occupied.

Digging for Scotland - Excited Dalmatian Dog Burrowing in the Sand

It's Not Just Weddings - Photography by John Gilchrist

With my two eldest enjoying a swimming session at Porty baths it made for an ideal opportunity for Dad and Daughter to kill an hour and catch a bit time together. Sand and shells was the order of the day, no matter what the weather, kids love the beach. Searching for shells to wash clean and paint was on the agenda. Whilst my youngest scoured and combed the sandy beach for the protective outer layer of sea creatures I managed to benefit from the local pet owners walking their dogs. Not having any pets of our own it was great to have an opportunity to catch a young pup only eleven weeks old out wetting his nose in the soggy sand. Adding to my delight was an energetic Dalmatian, full of beans and burrowing furiously and out to enjoy himself. The soft sand ideal for hiding and retrieving his ball, the deeper the hole the better, this dog was digging for Scotland, just loving every minute of it. Thanks to the owners for giving me the opportunity, it was so good. Of-course images in this set can be viewed over at Flickr Here

Family Break in the Scottish Borders

Wet Weekend Fun in Scotland

That time of year again when it’s nice to take advantage of the last of the good weather, well it was wet but warm. We dusted down the tent bag and throw all the gear into the trailer and headed of down the East Coast to Coldingham to meet with friends on a camping weekend. Crossslaw caravan park was an ideal pitch up for both nights, great family favourite, it offered five star facilities and we were well looked after, the kids had a ball, judjing by the noise coming from the play park. Even though it rained, how predictable, it wasn’t unexpected; we couldn’t have timed the showers better. The rain didn’t hinder the good times one bit, in fact it was great to hear the drumming on the tent during the night, so therapeutic, nice and relaxing when you are dry and all covered in. Just as well we had Super Simons tent, it offered shelter and accommodation during the social side of things in the evening. The kayaks & paddles were launched into the sea at Coldingham Bay, lovely sandy beaches to stroll for those not brave enough to dawn a wet suit and bold the North Sea. Rock pooling was Ideal to keep the kids amused, all sorts of sea fairing creatures to be had. Fish and chips at Eyemoths award winning chippy, finger liking good, fish suppers all round. On the journey home we nipped into Peesbay, another caravan park just up the road. Couldt have the kids going home all clean and tidy so it was paddle time, wading into the shallow waters getting covered in sand and ice cream, magic!
