St Giles Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh.
Originally founded in the 12thC, St Giles' Cathedral is a triumph of 14th and 15thC architecture. Its famous crown spire has dominated Edinburgh's skyline for 500 years. It stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
This was the church of John Knox and many great Scots are commemorated here, including Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns. There are many fine examples of Victorian and 12thC stained glass and a magnificent modern organ. The Thistle Chapel was designed by Lorimer and is a jewel of Scottish craftsmanship. The church is regularly visited by royalty on state occasions.
Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland's chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen).
